The black body is an ideal body that absorbs all the electromagnetic energy it receives, whatever the direction of incidence, without reflecting or scattering it.
Thus, the thermal radiation spontaneously emitted by ordinary objects or the environment (walls, floors, furniture...) can be approximated by blackbody radiation. This blackbody forms the basis for understanding the physical principles of non-contact temperature measurement and to calibrate absorption units.
In theory, the black body is a closed isothermal solid enclosure, empty and impermeable to radiation. When brought to a certain temperature, the blackbody cavity offers a excellent temperature uniformity. Only a small hole in the wall (small enough to have a negligible effect on equilibrium) allows blackbody radiation to be measured.
In practice at Mesurex: a hollow copper sphere (Ø100, others on request) is coated with high-temperature, matt black multilayer paint (up to 600°C). It features a hole for instrumentation of a measurement probe according to customer requirements (thermocouple or PT100, sensor diameter and cable length on request). In addition, it can be fitted with a hanging system so that it can be easily hung or installed in a variety of positions. This simple yet highly effective instrument is ideal for measuring -40° to +80°C, very stable, with a accuracy of 0.15°C (Pt100 mounting).
The measurement method applied with this dark radiation probe provides a excellent measurement result representative of the average value of the measured space. The black ball is particularly suitable for monitoring the ambient« temperature» in large premises (open spaces, industrial/logistics halls, veterinary laboratories, etc.), or to measure radiation from heating systems, machines or sunlight, or for legal or insurance purposes to establish the average radiant temperature of a given environment.
